A deciduous shrub or small tree that can reach about 30 feet. New growth branches are an attractive reddish color which changes to a greyish bark as it matures. Leaves turn bright yellow to orange in the fall. Grow on both sides of the Cascade Mountain; more common on the east side. It is best in sun or partial shade and prefers well drained soils.
