About the Vancouver Jade Kinnikinnick or Bearberry

Our best evergreen groundcover for sun. It is great on hillsides for erosion control and can cascade over rock walls or bulkheads along the seashore. It has pinkish-white urn-shaped flowers followed by red berries. Kinnikinnick is a name that indigenous peoples used for leaves they smoked. It was often mixed in with tobacco. Its two scientific names actually mean “bear grape & bearberry” ‘Vancouver Jade’ is a cultivated variety selected from Northwest plants developed by the University of British Columbia. It has glossy green leaves.
