Native to Oregon and California, this tree also does quite well in the Puget Sound area. Its narrow columnar shape, bushy down to the base, make it a natural for an evergreen screen. Its foliage is scale-like, pressed closely to twigs, a little coarser than Western Red Cedar’s. They grow rapidly, reaching 75-90 feet when mature. Tolerant of a variety of soil, exposure and moisture conditions. Its wood was often used for pencils and may have that familiar fragrance.
