About the Alaska Yellow Cedar
Alaska Cedar is a graceful conifer with drooping branches. Native from Alaska to California. Pyramidal growing to ~25 ft. wide and ~80 ft. tall. Well-behaved in a landscape, it is often used in commercial landscape plantings. The weeping cultivated variety ‘Pendula’ is very popular. The species can be variable on how much it weeps. It tolerates moderately moist soils; full sun preferred, but can grow in partial shade. The yellowish wood is highly prized by the Japanese due to its similarity to their sacred Hinoki Cypress. Natives in Alaska and British Columbia used Alaska Yellow Cedar in much the same way as more southern tribes used Western Red Cedar; however the preparation of the Alaska Cedar bark was more time-consuming.
