About the Red Elderberry

This deciduous shrub is very common west of the Cascades. While clusters of flowers are followed by large attractive clusters of red berries that are very popular with the birds, but may be toxic to humans when eaten raw. Blue elderberry is better for eating, but should still be processed into jelly or wine before consuming.
